Husband and wife team, Grant and Julie Hawthorne, began trading at Maltby Street Market in April 2012. Grant has drawn on his extensive years of experience as a British MasterChef, whilst maintaining a bit of fun and cheekiness, in showcasing the brand as something different.

Launched in March 2012, African Volcano remains the only range of British-produced, Mozambique-style peri peri that has been awarded 5 stars by the Guild of Fine Food (2012-2014 Great Taste Awards).

2013 saw African Volcano as part of the finalists for the Young British Foodie awards (in the chef category; they also featured at Camp Bestival) and was rated by GQ Magazine as having one of the “Top 22 things to eat in London”. Recommendations for the street food have ranged from Conde Nast Traveller, Forbes, The Metro, Timeout London, American Food and Wine, Buffe Swedish foodie magazine to Buzzfeed’s “21 London street foods to eat before you die”.

The sauces and marinades have been rated in the top five in London, by Londonist Magazine.

In 2015 Grant Hawthorne’s African Volcano was featured as part of TV chef James Martin’s “Home Comforts Series two – A taste of adventure”.

Grant and Julie look forward to welcoming you to their arch at Maltby Street Market, over the weekends, whether to enjoy some of the popular street food or to buy a bottle or three of the sauces to enjoy at home.
